Carl Longworth
Working from his studio in the rugged wilderness of the Peak District, Carl Longworth is passionate about both his working process and the subtlety and variety of British wildlife.
In each sculpture, he brings to life the unique character of the creature; be it the playful curiosity of an otter and the sinuous outline of his slim body muscular tail as he sniffs the air, or the ghostlike outline of a barn owl in flight; solitary, silent and haunting. The artist describes how he wishes: only to capture the simple essence and movement of the beautiful.
Having studied alongside Michael James and in the studio of one of Britain’s foremost figurative sculptors, John Wylder, Carl’s early imagination was nurtured in a powerhouse of culture and creativity. Wylder had been receiving major commissions from the likes of Cecil Beaton and the Duke of Westminster and as a keen animal sculpture himself, encouraged and inspired Carl’s sculptural vision.
Carl experimented with various different mediums such as marble carving and went on to concentrate on bronze casting. He became fascinated by the alchemy of bronze - the unique pattination of each piece and the wonderful textures and colours it can afford. Each individual sculpture involves elaborate and laborous process that Carl describes as somewhat Medieval in both its craftsmanship and attention to detail. Having worked up the model from wax or clay, depending on scale, he then builds up each individual piece so no two works are the same.
