Lucien Philippe Moretti was born in France in 1922. He studied at the Beaux Arts School, then used his great skills as both draftsman and people-watcher to become an important chronicler of life. He captured the widest range of activities and emotions on his omnipresent sketch pad and translated his drawings through to oil and watercolour paintings and lithographs. His output ranged from historically important depictions of the chaos of war and the sufferings of the Jewish people during the Holocaust, to the wonderfully carefree and happy scene you see here.

Moretti died in 2000, completing his final works in the small village of Etretat, France. As an artist so recognised for showing us pain and sorrow, he is known best for reflecting the happiness and joy of the1960s onwards.
