Born in Brussels into a wealthy and cultivated family, Toussaint become a pupil of Jean Portaels at the age of fifteen. Three years later he left Belgium for Paris where he completed his training. Toussaint was fascinated by the painters who specialised in female portraiture and this became the main focus of his painting. He became renowned as a portraitist and also a flower painter, and in 1929 Toussaint was awarded a gold medal by the Paris Salon for one of his female portraits.
